When the reader becomes the writer
Updated: Mar 15
I wanted to give a small insight into why I have decided to become a writer, maybe give someone else the confidence to try too. I have always been an avid reader. I spent my childhood devouring books, using them as an escape from, what was quite often, a painful reality. Books transported me to new places where anything could happen and no one could hurt me.
As long as I can remember I have always carried a book on me. Check my handbag, there will be one there. My house is full of bookcases in every room overflowing with books, I love the look of books on a shelf. I own a kindle but still love to read a physical book. Books have been a companion to me for so long, I could not imagine my life without them and they have made some of the hardest times in my life just a little bit easier. The second I finish one, I have to have the next one ready and waiting with a bookmark in it. I have read to my son everyday since he was born and I read to him throughout my pregnancy. I hope I can pass on my love of books and reading to him as well.
I have gone through many transitions recently, a drastic career change and then the plunge into parenthood, but throughout it all, my faithful companion the book, never left my side. Throughout these transitions, I had in the back of my mind that I would like to write. My head is full of stories and ideas and I thought I'd have a go at getting them on paper. A large part of my motivation has been wanting to give a little back to a world that has given me so much joy and pleasure throughout my life. To leave my mark in the written world.
I dream of walking into a bookstore and seeing my book on the shelf and watching someone pick it up and buy it. If I can even write one thing that gives one other person a moment of pleasure, I will have achieved my dream. I have a few works in progress at the moment as well as working on my blog. I will continue to enter short story competitions and hopefully one day receive a prize, I have already achieved one honourable mention. I will start posting some short fiction on my site soon and hopefully people will like what they read.
